Filtered to 2500+ and 10+ moves. Doubles removed. Players list created from the Chesscom leaderboards, copied by way of the brute force approach, as the API only returns the first 50 names.

Thanks for uploading this! I am trying to find a lot of good DBs and then making one huge one with it (Above 50GB uncompressed at LEAST)

You mean the monthly collections that Splassky was uploading to Bayfiles?

I have his raw collection from January 2021 to November 2022.


For example, here is December 2021. I had to remove the password and re-compress with 7 Zip. That is why the file is smaller.

I removed the passwords and compressed using 7Zip which reduced the size considerably.

These are the originals from Bayfiles. No filtering has been done to these PGNs.

Includes only the ones that are both "strong games" (with at least an average of 2300+ and with 10+ moves) and "beautiful games" (with anywhere from 1-3 medals for beauty awarded by ChessBase 17).

Yes. These are the same ones, plus some other games I'd already downloaded.

At first I used Scid. I opened each big PGN (which were each about 2.5 GB) and filtered to 2200-4000 rating range for both black and white, 20-999 half-moves, and no 960. This yielded about 500K, which I exported into a PGN. That whole process takes about five minutes.

Then I went into ChessBase 17 and converted those PGNs to 2CBH, which took about 15 min. Then filtered to just strong games, and exported those as a different 2CBH, which took about an hour. Opened *that* db and then scored on beauty, which took half an hour. Then filtered on just strong games and beautiful games, meaning it had to be both. That left me with about 150K, which I exported to a PGN.

With a bunch of PGNs like that, I then combined them into one 2CBH, and exported just 2021. That whole process for each file took about two hours.

Thanks a lot! Makes my process a whole lot easier.. I use pgn-extract to filter, which actually takes more space since it stores as moves as "1. e4 1... e5" not "1. e4 e5".. Does this process remove duplicates too?

If it does, and you have time, could you please do it with my other PGNs, or could you PM me the process to do it (does it work on ChessBase 17?)?

No need for a PM. It's actually quite simple. Convert the PGN in ChessBase 17 to 2CBH or CBH, and then on the Maintenance Tab of the main page, click on Find Double Games (as long as you've already selected the database in question). You want to set the number of games to 100, and do an exact search on all three parameters, not excluding year and result. That should find what you're looking for.

Scid and Scid vs PC are a bit more complicated, but basically you import the PGN into the clipbase and select Twin Checker Window from the Maintenance menu. Just use the default settings, and make sure to have a backup. It should return a list of all the doubles. So you should choose to negate the search list. In Scid you right-click over the list. In Scid vs. PC there's a button near the bottom. That gives you what is left of your original list of games. You can choose to Export Game To PGN. In Scid you do it by right-clicking, or the bug in the software sometimes saves the whole list, instead of the filtered list without the doubles. In Scid vs PC it's in Tools -- Export Current Game.
